Group Picture

“The CCÉ Camp Week was an opportunity to experience traditional Irish music at its best. Under the guidance of enthusiastic masters, campers of all ages were challenged and nurtured. What grew from this effort was a mutual respect that broke through all barriers. No matter their background, no matter their age, each individual was offered the opportunity to step into this tradition, and to help it grow.”

—Meg Ortel, CCÉ MAD Week Participant, 2010

2012 Classes,
Guest Artists, and Staff

Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann - O'Neill Malcom Branch

CCÉ MAD Week instrumental and dance classes are designed to offer registrants of all ages and levels of ability a unique opportunity to improve their playing and dancing in a fun-filled, challenging, and safe learning environment.

Instrumentalists will be taught traditionally—in group classes, arranged according to ability and experience with traditional Irish music. Each class will convene twice daily for ninety minutes. Each class will learn a variety of tunes—hornpipes, jigs, reels, polkas, mazurkas, barndances, airs, and highlands among others. The tunes in each class are not only fun to play, but great ear training exercises as well, helping students improve their ear, technique, and memory skills. Each instrumentalist will also receive a private half-hour lesson with one of our teaching staff during the week.

In addition to class and private instruction, instrumental students will have an opportunity to play in traditional Irish sessions, hear faculty performances throughout the week, and perform at the concluding ceili and concert on Friday night.

All full time or half-day registrants - instrumentalists and dancers - are encouraged to participate in lunchtime (11:30 - 1:30 PM M - F) elective classes described here.

Instrumental Class Lessons
Morning (10:00 - 11:30 AM) and Afternoon (1:30 - 3:00 PM)

Fiddle Classes

CCÉ MAD Week is pleased to feature the fiddling and class teaching of Kevin Burke, Tony DeMarco, Rose Flanagan, Patrick Mangan, Cleek Schrey and Donna Long for the entire week.

Fiddle ClassFiddle classes are designed to accommodate beginning, intermediate and advanced fiddlers and violinists of all ages and levels of experience. We hope to have sufficient enrollment and age distribution to offer two classes for each level - one for those under sixteen years of age and another for those seventeen and over. The beginning fiddle class for CCÉ MAD Week is best suited for the student who has studied the violin or fiddle for 8 months to a year, not a complete beginner. If you have substantially completed Book I of the Suzuki or Mark O’Connor methods or can play well in the keys of A, D and G, have a good ear, sense of rhythm and tempo, then you are well-prepared for a great week! The intermediate class is designed for violinists or fiddlers with two to four years experience. The advanced class is for fiddlers with four or more years experience.

Please bring a D flute and/or tin whistle and a recording device.  Class teacher: Laura Byrne
